Just how I love October for all the horror movies on television, so do I love December for all… well, some of their holiday programming. One of my favorites is the 1990 classic Home Alone. Yup, that cute little kid Kevin is all grown up and now a 35-year-old man child. But here is a drink to bring you back to your childhood with some adult touches – our simplified take on milk punch. All you need is some milk and a splash of bourbon, sugar, vanilla extract, and nutmeg. Get a frozen macaroni and cheese T.V. dinner and you’re set for a night in with Macaulay Culkin!
The classic milk punch is actually a New Orleans milk-based brandy/bourbon cocktail that is popular during the holidays. Citrus such as lemon is added to curdle the milk. The curds are then removed and you’re left with a clear tipple that will be shelf-stable for months. The kid in you doesn’t has time for that type of preparation, so just follow these simple directions and get your milk mustache on!
Milk Punch (Yield: 1 serving)
1 cup milk (whole is preferred for maximum richness, but 2% is about as low as we’d go)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp fine sugar or simple syrup
1.5 oz bourbon (or brandy as an optional substitution)
Dash of nutmeg
- Combine and shake up all ingredients in a shaker with ice.
- Strain into a glass and serve.
