[SPOILER ALERT: This post may contain spoilers from Game of Thrones: Season 5]
In a few days, the long-awaited sixth season of Game of Thrones will finally be upon us, and I suspect many fans will need a stiff drink to take the edge off of the suspense. If you haven’t seen the fantasy series based on George RR Martin’s epic novels, A Song of Ice and Fire (and seriously, why haven’t you yet?), the TV show is notorious for its gratuitous sex and violence, as well as for killing off fan’s favorite characters. I don’t want to spoil the last season for anyone who hasn’t seen it, but one particular death really broke my heart. I’m hoping that fan theories are correct and that a certain character may come back to life in in the future? Maybe? Oh well, a girl can dream, right?
Season 6 will premiere on Sunday, April 24th and I don’t doubt that this new season will be full of more grisly surprises. Since we already made a mulled wine, which is the Queen Regent’s favorite standby, I thought I’d make a cocktail in honor of one of my other favorite characters, Daenerys Targaryen. In the series, Daenerys is the sole surviving offspring of the royal Targaryen family who plans to claim her rightful place as Queen of Westeros with her three dragons. This cocktail is called The Green Dragon, and although none of Daenerys’ dragons are green, the exotic blend of caraway liqueur and mint in this cocktail make it appropriate for the foreign land of Meereen, where Daenerys currently resides. Aside from the strong herbaceous flavor, its vibrant green color also brings to mind the magical and volatile liquid, wildfire, which was used by many members of the Targaryen family.
Since the TV series has already surpassed the books, no one knows how events will pan out in the sixth season. I think we’re all rooting for the Mother of Dragons to get back her dragons and show the Westerosi not to mess with a Targaryen. This cocktail is a tribute to Danaerys Stormborn of House Targaryan, who will hopefully survive this next season of Game of Thrones, although only time will tell….
The Green Dragon Cocktail (Yield: 1 cocktail)
1 ½ ounce gin
½ ounce caraway liqueur (Kümmel)
¾ ounce green crème de menthe
Juice from ½ lemon
A few dashes of bitters (peach, angostura, orange, etc.)
- Mix the gin, caraway liqueur, crème de menthe, lemon, bitters, and ice to a cocktail shaker. Shake until chilled, then strain into a martini glass. Enjoy!
